Not so romantic first meets

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

As you know from my post a couple of weeks ago, I believe that Valentine's Day (like many other holidays) has become quite commercialized. In lieu of cliche gifts, I suggested using the day to start a romantic tradition/habit like reading a romance novel with your significant other.

Thinking about spending time together also got me thinking about how I first met my husband. It was anything but cliche...or romantic. I had gone to tour a biology lab where I was signed up to do undergraduate research. The professor I needed to speak with was on the phone. He told my friend and me to go on into the lab and his grad student would get us started. Well, his grad student (over 6 ft tall with dark hair and an intense look on his handsome face) was busy with a fish. He looked up, distracted, and asked if I'd hold the fish for him. Of course I said yes. Little did I know that gar (a pre-historic, bony, air-breathing fish) are extremely slimy. Imagine the goo coming off my hands when I let go. It was lovely.

He did speak briefly to my friend and me afterwards...before one of his 'groupie' lab students came to say hi to him. Did I mention that I wore an oversized t-shirt, had braces on my teeth, a pimple breakout on my chin, unplucked eyebrows (had never plucked them before), and I was extremely shy?

Somehow, we still ended up married. Funny how things work.

So do you have any fun stories about how you met your match? If not, do you have a favorite hero/heroine first meeting from a movie or romance novel?

  1. No story from me but Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet come to mind. Happy Valentine's Day.

  2. Can't remember which book it was, but I remember a meeting between a police officer and a lady, who he had stopped for speeding. She thought he was being a little overenthusiastic in doing his job and he thought differently. Made for an interesting introduction.

  3. Anne - They're one of my favorite couples.

J.L. - Hmmm. I wonder if you're talking about The Officer's Girl by Leigh Duncan (Harl. American). It involves a hurricane or tropical storm evacuation. Great story.

  5. Nothing special here, but I read of a hero(lighthouse keeper and music writer)rescued the heroine from raging sea during storm(solo yatcher), it was an interesting introduction!

  6. Jennifer - I'd say being shy on a blind date is a tough one!

Nas - I love heroes in lighthouses. Nora Roberts has such a hero in one of her books (Macgregor series, I think). It's a great set up for the brooding, lone wolf hero. Yum ;).

  7. I met my hubby when he asked me if I wanted a popsicle LOL. He then realized in horror that he'd approached the wrong girl. His friend had told him the blonde with the long hair liked him. That would be my friend Heidi, although that description was a bit vague. Sounds like kid stuff, right? Yeah, it was high school!!

  9. Rula I just want to hear more about your story, how did you bag your hottie amidst all the groupies?

  10. LOL, Joanna! I'm not sure. I think maybe I intrigued him because I wasn't a groupie out to get him...at least not overtly, heh. He used to give me a hard time and tease me about my supposedly naive ideas about the world. Maybe it was the braces! LOL!

  11. I LOVE first meeting stories. I think it says so much about the people as a couple.

The short version of mine is that I met my future hubby because my girlfriend wanted desperately to talk to him and I was her courage. We never spoke, but thereafter for weeks I found him wherever I was. He was the one. He still is.

The long and romantic version is here: http://mariazannini.blogspot.com/2010/10/other-woman.html

  12. Maria! I just read your long version at your 'other woman' link and it made my heart melt. Sigh. You can't get more romantic than that. Made me think of Mr. Darcy...quiet and reserved. My DH is pretty reserved. There was something about him girls liked, but he didn't act like a rock star or anything. In fact, I had no idea he liked me (apart from liking to give me a hard time) until a few months later when the semester ended. My research class was over so I shrugged and said 'I guess I'm out of here' and he said 'What? So you only hang out in the lab for the experiments?' My jaw dropped and I had no clue what to say. I mean. I liked him, but as shy as I was, there was no way I was letting him know!

  13. Ref: 'What? So you only hang out in the lab for the experiments?'

How did you manage to keep seeing him once your class was over?

  14. I ended up signing up for more undergraduate research credits. Then there were the walks to the student union to get lunch...the walking me to my car because it was dark...

We actually ended up working at the same place after we left the University, but it wasn't until I left town to go back to school that he finally proposed. It took him 4 1/2 yrs! I think the distance finally did it ;).
